SCOPE
Melcar Ltd was contracted to install 200’ of 36” steel casing under Amtrak’s Acela high speed rail lines. To complete the install correctly, the team used a guided pilot tube system to ensure the casing would stay on grade with minimal disturbance to the ground above.
CHALLENGES
In order to meet Amtrak’s demands, multiple crews worked around the clock to ensure the project could be done with as little impact as possible. Crews also worked in partnership with engineering firms to monitor track elevations 24/7 to ensure there was no disturbance. After every shift, there were multiple meetings with crews coming in and out to ensure there was a solid handoff of information between shifts until the project was complete. These meetings proved to be invaluable once heavy clay and ever-changing soil conditions were encountered.
SUCCESS FACTORS/OUTCOMES
Once the casing was in, Melcar crews were able to work hand in hand with Artesian crews to install a 24” main inside the casing and get all pipes fused in without any issue. Both Artesian and Amtrak stakeholders had expressed sincere gratitude to Melcar for completing the challenging install in such a timely and safe manner.
